Later manuals for the same transfer case specify ATF instead, I'm guessing this was for gas mileage reasons. The newer 205 transfer case that calls for ATF is the same as far as I know to the old one that I have.

First of all yes it will damage the transfer case with no oil in it or even low oil. if it is just a seal then it is easy to replace, but if it means splitting the transfer case this is not a job for the diy, unless you have experience with transmissions or transfer cases.
